The First Crusade in the Chronicle of Matthew of Edessa (952-1136)

The present study seeks to examine the development, progression, and consequences of the First Crusade in Anatolia based on the Chronicle of Matthew of Edessa (Urfalı Mateos). The Crusades, while ostensibly religious in nature, were in fact complex military movements motivated by profound political and economic ambitions. These campaigns profoundly affected the lives of all peoples inhabiting Anatolia, including the Byzantines, Turks, Armenians, and other local communities. Among the historical sources that document these events, Matthew of Edessa's Chronicle occupies a particularly significant place. Distinguished by its detailed and vivid narration, the work provides invaluable information about the events following the year 952 and offers unique insights into the circumstances of the First Crusade. The First Crusade, more organized and better equipped than subsequent expeditions, began in 1096 and continued until December 1099, leaving behind extensive devastation and numerous massacres across Anatolia. One of the major outcomes of this campaign was the establishment of the Principality of Antioch, which became a neighboring power to the Byzantines, Turks, and Armenians, thereby reshaping the political and social dynamics of the region. Consequently, in evaluating the relevant sections of Matthew of Edessa's Chronicle, this study also considers the conditions of these communities during the course of the Crusade. Analyzing such a significant military movement through one of the most valuable primary sources of the period not only contributes to a better understanding of the First Crusade itself but also sheds light on the lesser-known aspects of its impact on Anatolia and its diverse populations. By doing so, this research aims to reveal historical details and perspectives that have hitherto remained largely unexplored in modern historiography.
