Abstract (EN)

Cesarean section (CS) compared to normal vaginal delivery (ND) has greater risk of birth complications and the recovery time is also longer. It is known to cause less satisfaction and carry a greater risk of postpartum mood disorders. Despite the rapid increase in the number of births by cesarean section, only a few studies were performed to analyze (on the theoretical foundations) the impact of psychosocial consequences on the delivery method. Nearly half of the births that take place in Turkey are performed by cesarean section. Turkey with this structure has been placed in a group of high incidence of cesarean delivery countries by The World Health Organization (WHO). Although Cesarean section (CS) is associated withless satisfaction, carry a greater risk of postpartum mood disorders, loss, failure, and low self-esteem, almost half of the women prefer cesarean section. The purpose of this study is to compare birth with ND to birth with CS on the level of anxiety in the next pregnancy. The anxiety levels were found to be significantly reduced with the second birth in general. Also it is thought that women who have an CS delivery their first time have less anxiety than the women who have ND. The result of this study makes us think that having pre-pregnancy health problems, living space during pregnancy and number of previous pregnancies are few components that affect anxiety levels and the methods of delivery. In contrast, working or smoking during pregnancy, having a preoperative history, getting psychological support during pregnancy and the postpartum period, medical support or training before pregnancy, or a disease occurs and continues during pregnancy are not the factors that affect the anxiety level or delivery method. Likewise, diseases such as hypertension, obesity or diabetes are also not the factors that affect the anxiety levels. If mild anxiety is considered to be a necessity of life and indicates a normal physiological condition; in this study, subjects who have mild or no anxiety could be considered healthy which is more than two-thirds of the number of subjects. According to a study, only one third of the pregnant women have anxiety problems and may need a psychiatrist. 59 Factors such as residing near or far from hospital, the presence of pre-pregnancy health issues, and number of previous pregnancies are considered to be effective on anxiety that occurs during pregnancy and/or delivery. Also, these factors significantly affect the decision on which is the best delivery method. These results suggest that location of pregnant women (who live in city or country) is important to cure pre-pregnancy health issues, or condition of previous pregnancies would alleviate the difficulties in the next birth process, it would help during delivery and as well as help us choose the best delivery method for that woman. To conclude, there isn't found to be a significant difference in anxiety levels with women who gave ND or CS with previous birth. Key words: ND (Vaginal/Normal vaginal delivery), CS (cesarean section), Anxiety, Type of delivery
