Abstract (EN)

INTRODUCTIONIn DSM-IV vaginismus is categorized as a sexual dysfunction and inserted in sub-category of sexual pain disorders. The basic diognosis criterion is that ?it is the existence of the spasm of 1/3 muscle of vaginas outside, this spams reiterates or is continuosly unwilled and impedes sexual intercourse?. The disorder which is seen often in our country and most countries in eastern culture, is rarely seen in western countries.PURPOSEIn this study it is aimed to compare with the patients? socio-demographic features, sexual myth, partner evaluation, sexual satisfaction, sexual story who applied to İnönü University Medical Faculty Psychiatry Department between the date of 1998-2008 and have vaginismus.METHODThis study is retrospective and the sexual myth scale, sexual story form, Golombock-Rust sexual satisfaction scale, Birtchnell partner evaluation scale and socio-demographic data form which was prepared by the researcher have been used while doing patients? clinic evalution. Findings have been evaluated by using SPSS 13 programme.FINDINGSIt is confirmed that the patients? average age is 24,4 years, marriage period is 23,3 months, education level %64,4 of them is ten years and over %70,2 of patients are housewives.Generally, in terms of short application period for psychiatrist it is pleased to see that the average marriage periods in our study are shorter than the other studies. But it is concluded that by the increase of women?s education level, their applications period for psychiatrist have not diminished, the believes in myth are high in women from all sections, generally the level of sexual satisfactions are low, the knowledge of sexuality is little, the conservative and repressive attitude of the society is stable, sexuality remains as myth at high rate, other branch physicians are inadequate to direct patients to psychiatry clinic and used non-ethical methods. It is found that this group patients offer resistance to touch or being touched and they get better longer than other patients and have less education. It is thought-provoking that if the families are included in this period, it results in act of violence to women.RESULTIt is found that vaginismus which affects most fields of life, should be elevated such an important social health problem, people?s sexual point of view and their education about this topic should be raised;vaginismus should be more presented as a psychiatric disease to media and schools, there should be more cooperation with gynecology and urology disciplines, more psychiatrists should study in this field.Key Words: Vaginismus, socio-demografic features, sexual satisfaction, sexual myth, partner evaluation.
