Evaluation of the attitudes of Veterinary Faculty students to know about laboratory animals used in scientific research and attributes to the use of laboratory animals in research

This study aims to determine the change of the level of knowledge, culture and attitude of students of Ondokuz Mayıs University Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 2021-2022 Academic Year on use of lab animals in scientific research in five years academic period. In total 5 different groups; 37 students from the first grade, 44 students from the second grade, 46 students from the third grade, 41 students from the fourth grade and 52 students from the fifth grade; were involved in the study. This study is a cross-sectional survey study. The data was collected through face to face interviews. According to the data, the students', who attended to the Laboratory Animals Breeding and Laboratory Animals Diseases classes, level of knowledge about lab animals and their usage in scientific research is higher than the other groups. Female students' approach towards the topic is more conscientous than males. However, they also don't take uasage of lab animals kindly in the studies not directly targeting to enhance health protection and healing. According to the survey results, the courses given related to the lab animals science have positive impact on students' level of knowledge and attitude on use of lab animals in scientific research and these students place scientific requirements before other concerns. It was observed that, these courses shall be taken to the academic syllabus based on the content and academic grade. It is also suggested that, these courses shall be given in upper grades. This survey study is suggested to be extended to all faculties' students attending to the lab animals breeding and diseases courses in order to understand the general profile on the topic.
