Effects of age and gender on serum, heart and liver coenzyme Q10 concentrations in rats given vitamin C

Abstract (EN)
Vitamins and their effects have always been the focus of attention with research coming to the present from years ago and it will continue to be the center of attention. İt is wondered by research that although many beneffical effects of vitamin C which is an important vitamin are known, C vitamin may still have unknown effects and which parameters they affect. İn our study, vitamin C supplementation at a daily dose of 500 mg /kg the effect of coenzyme Q10 levels in blood, heart and liver tissues was investigated using Sprague Dawley rats of different age and gender groups. İn the study, 84 Sprague Dawley rats weighing 100-600 g and of different age and gender were were used as animal material. The rats were divided into 12 groups as young, adult, old and their control group. There are 7 animals in each group. The rats were fed with pure food and tap water for 30 days. While vitamin C at a daily of 500 mg/kg was applied with gastric gavage to the experimantal groups, on the other hand 1 cc distilled water was applied to the control group bu gastric gavage everyday to create the same stress. On the day of the experiment, the heart and liver samples were taken into transparrent bags and the blood samples were taken into 8,5 ml blood tubes and the serum was separated and the coenzyme Q10 levels of the samples taken were measured. İn the study it was found while no effect of vitamin C supplementation on serum heart and liver coenzyme Q10 levels was observed (p>0.05), females have higher serum coenzyme Q10 levels than males (p<0.05) and aged rats have lower serum coenzyme Q10 levels than younger rats on the other hand heart coenzyme Q10 levels are found to be higher (p<0.05). As a result it was configured that while the effect of vitamin C supplementation on serum, heart and liver coenzyme Q10 levels was not observer, gender and age gad an effect.
