The problem of democratic difference/pluralism and political community in the thought of William E. Connolly

William E. Connolly sees the problem of political evil as founder problem of political life. He proposes the politics of pluralization as an instrument for the problem of political evil in the post-modern era. According to him, acceleration of speed at post-modern era as a political possibility for the culture of democracy can be come to life. This condition needed by politics of pluralization. This type of politics aims to own members maturation by the cultivation of an ethical attitude. According to Connolly, this process of maturation which is bounded by lifetime, require to regard life as a gratitude and consider the differences as an abundance. Also this type of democratic culture comes with the ethos of engagement which implies a specific form of political community. The content of ethos of engagement is the focus of this thesis. Ethos of engagement is a symphonical harmony which does not only aim to appoint the political value of current differences but also new identities/differences. At this point, ethos of engagement produces a tension in the democratic thought of Connolly. Because ethos of engagement, detaches each of identities from their ontological grounds. On the other hand, it widens the range of sense of belonging by the cultivation of ethical attitude and by political struggle. The multiple identities which stay on this community, are seen as precious because they contribute to this political community. Also this form of political community can be reflect an identity's character which is already maturated according to this ethical attitude. Finally the ethos of engagement can be thought as an abstract, wide and dynamic political community based on its own idea of onto-political. Key Words: Political Theory, Democracy, William E.
