Canik Sanjak prisons in XIX. and XX. centuries

Crime and punishment; when we look at the meaning of these two concepts, it is seen that they are a sold as the history of humanity, these Notion shave changed more than once along the history line. In this regard, until the modernization period, punishments were generally seen as an application for the body of the individual, while the value given to the human being has changed with the modernization and care was taken not to touch the sanctity of the body. Of course, there should be a process in which the perpetrators will be punished, but this will be aimed at restricting freedom, not again sit the body. In the modernization period, the punishment given for crimes appears to be in cancelation. Reform movements in Europe in terms of keeping up with the modern period of prisons also affected the Ottoman state in a short time. It has been tried to deal with how the Canik Sanjak Prisons, which we examined, were evaluated in the light of these forms. As it can be under stood from the first prison records found, efforts were made to carry out studies in prisons, which were in a dilapidated state, by considering the health conditions. In our thesis, in which both the prison, prison Officers and prisoners were examined, it was determined that many issues were not sufficient, and even though the necessary situations were determined and reported to their levant ministries, the bad situation could not reach the desired level.
