Study of tent surfaces on the Ottoman miniatures of 16th century in terms of illumination

Tent designs, some of which are included in the miniature manuscripts of the 16th century, which are discussed within the scope of the planned thesis, are also found in the miniature manuscript called "Süleymanname" ("Book of Suleiman") written and illustrated in this century. It was the fifth volume of Şehname-i Al-i Osman, completed in 1558 by Fetullah Arif Çelebi who was the first Shahname writer appointed by Suleiman the Magnificent. The main events of the period of Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1555) were described in chronological order on the Süleymanname. There were sixty-nine miniatures in the artwork and these miniatures also contain elements that reflect the art understanding of the period. The patterns found on the materials produced with the artistic understanding of the period were also seen on the tents. The tents of the miniatures on the traditional book arts were also decorated with various patterns. In this respect, the decorations on the otağ designed in the miniatures on Süleymanname, will be examined in connection with the illumination art in this thesis. In addition, the manuscript called as "Nüzhet-i Esrarü'l–Ahyar der-Ahbar-ı Sefer-i Zigetvar" written in the middle of the 16th century was the artwork of Ferudun Ahmet Bey and thought that its miniatures were made by Nakkaş Osman. The artwork consisted of 305 foils and nineteen of them had miniatures. It was about the Szigetvár expedition (1566) which was last expedition of Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566). This manuscript, which is located in the treasury inventory number 1339 in the library of the Topkapı Palace Museum, will be examined within the scope of the thesis subject and examined in terms of illumination art. Another artwork we examined for the thesis is a manuscript named "Hünername" written by Seyyid Lokman in the 16th century, Nakkaş Osman and his team made its miniatures. That artwork is registered in treasury in T.S.M. numbers H.1523. It is planned that the thesis will consist of three parts. In the first part, the art and cultural environment of the 16th century and the importance of the tent in Turks will be emphasized. In the second part, drawings of miniatures with tents on the discussed miniatures will be made and the decorative elements on the tent will be emphasized. In the third part, the catalog will take place.
