Cultural transfer in Arabic teaching sets as a foreign language: The example of the Ebced teaching set

Communication has historically occurred as a necessity between people, tribes, societies, and states for religious, social, cultural, and economic reasons. As we reach the present day, in addition to these, we can observe the emergence of many different dimensions of communication, such as human-to-human, human-to-machine, and machine-to-human communication. As a social being, humans have always felt the need to communicate with others, and this need has been attempted to be fulfilled through language, the most important communication tool. This has led to efforts related to learning and teaching the languages of tribes and nations. With the advent and spread of Islam, Arabic has become one of the most widely spoken, learned, and taught languages in the world. Whether as the language of the Qur'an and the religious practices required by our faith, or because the historical traces and borders of our country have extended across a vast area, including much of the Arab world, Arabic has gained significant importance in our country as well. Throughout Turkish-Islamic history, Arabic has been learned and taught as the language of writing, science, and art. Efforts to teach Arabic in schools and universities in our country have been continuously increasing. Within the scope of these educational activities, Arabic textbooks, materials, and curricula are being developed, constantly updated, and renewed. One of the most important conditions for effectively learning a language is the necessity of also learning the culture of the language being studied. This depends on preparing and using language teaching books and tools that can most accurately and appropriately convey the culture of the language. It is known that many universities in our country, particularly in faculties of theology or Islamic studies, use the Abjad Teaching Set, which plays a significant role in teaching Arabic. This study examines the Abjad Arabic Teaching Set as an example of cultural transmission in Arabic language teaching sets for foreign language learners. In this context, topics such as language, the importance of Arabic, teaching Arabic as a foreign language, teaching tools used in Arabic language teaching, culture, cultural categories, the language-culture relationship, cultural transmission in language teaching, and the importance of culture in Arabic language textbooks for foreign learners have been discussed. Subsequently, cultural elements in the Abjad Arabic Teaching Set, consisting of four volumes of textbooks and workbooks, were reviewed, categorized, and the findings related to the transmission of cultural elements in each category were addressed.
