The comparison between the vocabulary used in a1 and a2 level course books for English as a foreign language and Turkish as a foreign language

Abstract (EN)

One of the main objectives of language learning is communication and in order to establish an effective and healthy communication the vocabulary of the learner is very important. The learner must be develop the vocabulary to effectively communicate or improve the quality of communication. In order to increase the efficiency in vocabulary teaching, the vocabulary of the target language should be determined in a healthy way and the course books that are the main sources of the vocabulary should be designed at the level of this designated vocabulary. It is especially important to carry out such studies in Turkish teaching which is becoming increasingly popular. For this reason, the inclusion of the appropriate vocabulary in the Turkish teaching coursebooks as a foreign language will provide an efficient learning opportunity for the foreign language learners gradually from simple to complex and vocabulary will develop thanks to this. In order to achieve this purpose, it is necessary to examine and compare coursebook prepared in Turkey and in other countries. It is also necessary to choose a popular language and book in order to get valuable and reliable data. This stage is important in preparing an efficient source for language teaching. In this aspect English which is the most frequently learned language in our country, is preferred to compare with Turkish. In this study the vocabulary used at A1 and A2 levels (basic level) of course book prepared for Turkish as a foreign language and English as a foreign language was compared. For English teaching as foreign language "New Headway" series of Oxford University Press; for Turkish teaching as foreign language ''Istanbul Turkish For Foreigners'' Series of Istanbul University Language Center, are selected. Since the number of A1 and A2 level lectures of these books are different from each other, the vocabulary used under common topics are identified and compared. The comparison revealed the differences and the similarities between the two books. This comparison is done in both, vocabulary and frequency.
