Transmi̇ssi̇on of cultural values in course book used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language

The number of people who want to learn Turkish as a foreign language is increasing day by day. Since the promotion of the culture of that language is important together with the language teaching, it is planned to investigate the cultural elements in the Turkish course books. Course book are the primary materials used in language teaching, and it is important that the texts in the course book contain cultural content. Because in the process of teaching the target language, the transfer of the target culture can also be carried out through course book. It is thought that texts are the most important part in order to ensure cultural transfer in course book. The texts in the course book should contain cultural elements suitable for the determined language levels. In this study, it is aimed to examine the course book used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language in terms of cultural transfer. The sample of this study, which was carried out with the document review method, one of the qualitative research methods, consists of the C1 level course book of Gazi Yabancılar İçin Türkçe, Istanbul Yabancılar İçin Türkçe and Yedi İklim Türkçe Teaching Sets. The books included in the research were examined according to the table created by three faculty members who are experts in the field of Turkish Education, based on the criteria set in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and by making some changes. The data obtained in the study were analyzed by content analysis technique. Among the course book examined according to our research results, It was determined that Yedi İklim Turkish Textbook complied with the criteria set in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages more than other course book. Another result of our study is that we did not find any cultural elements that could relate the texts in the course book and some items in the data collection tool.
