Investigation of teaching Turkish foreigners course books in terms of 21st century skills

Abstract (EN)
The aim of this research is to examine the reading texts in the textbooks for teaching Turkish as a foreign language in terms of 21st century skills. For this purpose, the texts in the textbooks for teaching Turkish to foreigners were examined based on "life and career skills, learning and innovation skills, information, media and technology skills" within the framework of 21st century skills. The data set of the research, which was conducted through document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, consists of the Yeni Istanbul Coursebook for International Students B1, B2, C1 and Yedi İklim Turkish Coursebook B1, B2, C1 level textbooks. A total of 53 reading texts in the Yeni İstanbul book sets and 233 reading texts in the Yedi İklim book sets were examined within the scope of the research. Content analysis technique was used to analyze the data obtained. According to the research findings, it was determined that the number of 21st century skills included in the reading texts in the Yeni İstanbul book set was 368 in total, 162 in the B1 level textbook, 126 in the B2 level textbook and 80 in the C1 level textbook. In addition, it was determined that the number of 21st century skills included in the reading texts in the Yedi İklim book set was 474 in total, 197 in the B1 level textbook, 146 in the B2 level textbook and 131 in the C1 level textbook. The most frequently mentioned skill in all levels examined in the Yeni İstanbul and Yedi İklim textbooks is the main skill of "learning and innovation", followed by "life and career skills", and "information, media and technologies" skills are least included in the reading texts. It turned out to be the main skill in the field. If the sub-skills of the 21st century skills are included in the textbooks, it has been determined that critical thinking and problem solving skills are the skills most frequently included in the texts. It has been observed that the least included skill in the Yeni İstanbul B1 textbook is media literacy, while information literacy skills are not included. In the Yeni İstanbul B2 textbook, media literacy and collaboration skills are the least included skills, and information literacy skills are not included; It has been determined that social and intercultural skills, information communication technology literacy, communication and collaboration skills are the least included skills in the Yeni İstanbul C1 textbook, while information literacy, flexibility and adaptation, and media literacy skills are not included in the texts. The least included skill in the Yedi İklim B1 textbook is leadership and responsibility skills; It was revealed that the information literacy skill was the least mentioned skill in the Yedi İklim B2 textbook, and the media literacy skill was the least included skill in the Yedi İklim C1 textbook.
