Improving speaking skills in distance Turkish education to foreign students and problems

It is a historical phenomenon that people migrate to other places by leaving the places where they live due to wars and other reasons. Depending on these migrations, many people become refugees in other countries where they are foreign to their culture and language and experience many problems caused by this difference. Language, as one of the most important means of communication and interaction between people, is an important tool for refugees to recognize and adapt to the society they live in. However, learning a foreign language has many difficulties. Especially in terms of speaking skills, these problems seem to be more. Turkey doors to refugees who migrated out of the country since the start of the political conflict in Syria. As a result, in the intervening period of more than three million Syrians have settled in various ways in Turkey. As can be seen in every refugee, it is a real problem for Syrian refugees to learn Turkish and to be able to speak enough to establish adequate communication with the Turkish society. Today, it is seen that many Syrian immigrants and students learn Turkish by using various learning opportunities. In this research, Syrian students' problems to improve speaking skill, studying in Turkey and learning Turkish as a foreign language with distance education method, have been examined. In Esenler, Istanbul, statistical analyzes were made with the data collected from 100 students learning Turkish with distance education, and it was determined that the students were not sensitive in this regard although they were aware of the importance of practicing Turkish speaking. The data collected from 100 students learning Turkish via distance education were analyzed in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) Package Program and it was determined that the students had important problems about speaking skills. It is seen that students have difficulties in comprehending and using Turkish abstract concepts with the concepts mentioned in official speeches. However, although students are aware of the importance of practicing Turkish to improve their speaking skills, it is seen that they do not use the opportunities of speaking and practicing Turkish especially in social environments.
