Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, Neologos, an important Ottoman Greek newsaper published during the Ottoman Empire, and the publication years of 1873 and 1874 are critically examined. Focusing on the equal rights to be granted to minorities within the framework of the reforms brought about by the Tanzimat era, the said newspaper contributed to the development of the consciousness of a national identity through its articles. In this period when communication rapidly gained in importance, the process of development of the press in both the Ottoman and Greek states is investigated in this work by presenting examples from a variety of periodicals. As well, the thesis includes the comments and solutions put forward by Neologos as a witness to the conditions that surrounded the Ottoman Empire in this period. Moreover, over and beyond the events within the Ottoman Empire, this work feels the pulse in other countries and keeps abreast with their agendas, thereby presenting a wide-ranging array of political, administrative, economic and cultural news content.
