Space, time and family in contemporary Turkish cinema: the case of Emin Alper

Cinema has evolved as a human-centered art form since its inception. It has been influenced by unique movements in every society it has developed and expanded within, shaping itself accordingly. Turkish cinema has also undergone periods of development, being influenced by various movements. In recent times, films produced in Turkish cinema have emerged with a different structure compared to past Turkish films. Particularly, films created with a neoformalist approach have opened the doors not only for watching but also for contemplation, presenting a viewer-centered structure. In this study, the three feature films of Emin Alper, "Tepenin Ardı" (Beyond the Hill), "Abluka" (Frenzy), and "Kız Kardeşler" (Sisters), have been examined through a neoformalist perspective. The reception of these films by the audience, as well as the interpretation of the film's elements such as setting, time, family, language, narrative technique, and themes employed by Emin Alper, will be emphasized. Based on the responses gathered from the questions, various insights will be drawn regarding Emin Alper and his cinema. Content analyses of the selected films have been conducted, and how the viewers perceive the concepts related to the films has been analyzed through semi-structured interviews.
