MSc Thesis Abstract FormName of the Student : Serhat TozburunProgram of Study : PhysicsThesis Title : Experimental Investigation of Pulsed, Eye-Safe,Solid-State Lasers in the Near InfraredAbstractIn this work, three different pulsed, eye-safe, solid-state laser systems were experimentallyconstructed and characterized. The operation wavelengths of these sources were in the 1500-1600nm range. The investigated systems include, 1064-nm-pumped potassium titanyl phosphate(KTP) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) at 1572 nm, flashlamp-pumped Er-glass laser at 1563nm, and 1314-nm-pumped barium nitrate (Ba(NO3)2) Raman laser at 1524 nm. A flashlampdriver was first built and used as the energy source in these experiments. In all cases, pulsedoutput was obtained by employing the technique of passive Q switching with different saturableabsorbers. In the case of the KTP OPO, the Nd:YAG pump laser operating at 1064 nm waspassively Q-switched by using a Cr4+:YAG crystal. In the case of 1563-nm Er-glass and 1314-nmNd:YAG lasers, cobalt-doped magnesium aluminates (Co2+-doped MgAl2O4 or Co:MALO) wasused for passive Q switching. For each case, both the pump as well as the eye-safe convertingscheme was characterized in the long-pulse and short-pulse regimes. The best results wereobtained with the Er-glass laser, where as high as 21-mJ pulses with duration of 40 ns wereobtained at 1563 nm. In this case, the reflectivity of the output coupler was 75 %. The mechanismof passive Q switching was further modeled by using a rate equation approach. Passively Q-switched operation of the 1064-nm Nd:YAG, 1314-nm Nd:YAG, and 1563-nm Er-glass laserswas analyzed. Overall, very good agreement was obtained between the experimentally measuredoutput pulse parameters and mode predictions.
