Determination of wind potential at Yalova University and sample application

Abstract (EN)

Due to the fact that all the fossil fuels will be consumed day by day and the percentage of harmful gases and CO2 in the atmosphere gradually increases therefore renewable energy resources are considering highly important worldwide. Turkey is showing a similar development in this trend to increase of efforts to reduce dependence on the oil and that the orientation towards renewable energy sources. Among the renewable energy sources, wind energy is the most favorable in terms of applicability. According to data from the year of 2020, Turkey has greater than 8 GW of installed capacity. Determining wind potential at Yalova University with REPA maps, wind speed data calculated using the Weibull distribution and computer programs used (WAsP and WindPRO), which were analyzed on the basis of 10-year wind data provided for Yalova University (between 01.01.2012 and 18.04.2021) work has been done. As a result of the study, Yalova University's average wind speed value (Vm) was determined as 3.76 m/s and wind power potential (ED) 62.7 W/m2. As a result of this kind of studies in different cities in Turkey which carried out, the wind speed and the power density have been reached based on its related cities. Weibull density function, Rayleigh and computer programs, which are the leading methods in this kind of different studies have been used but in the other cases (Modeling, Turbine deployment, etc.), WAsP and WindPRO were generally preferred as computer programs. The calculated wind speed data as a result of all these studies and the study we have done for Yalova University were compared with the wind speed data analyzed from the REPA. As a result of the comparisons reviewed, it was determined the values in the studies examined were shown to be 20.4% higher than the REPA values.
