The effect of echo reading method on fluent reading skills

Abstract (EN)

In this research, the effect of echo reading method is examined in regards of correcting oral reading errors and improving reading comprehension skills of primary school fourth grade students. The research is carried out with a student selected in proper with the aim of the research from a primary school in Bartın. The student selected for the study despite not having any problems with aspects of mentality, auditory and visual, has reading difficulties. In order to determine the reading errors and reading comprehension level of the student, the reading text called "Old Man and Rich Man" from the primary school fourth grade Turkish textbook certified by Head Council Of Education And Morality was read by the student and when evaluated according to the Error Analysis Inventory, it is determined that the reading level is at the fourth grade frustration level. Then, the third grade level text called "Uncle Shoe" was read by the student and as a result of the evaluation, it is found that the reading level of the student is at the third grade frustration level. Then, the text called "Little Penguin" at the second grade level, which is a lower level was read by the student and it is determined that the student's level is at the second grade level. Training is performed individually in a quiet environment. Each week four hours total 32 hours of education by using echo reading method is implemented to the student whose reading level was found. Each session consists of two 45-minutes class hours. Each session continued on different days of the week in 2 sessions for 8 weeks and was completed in 16 sessions. At the end of the teaching process, in order to determine whether there is a decrease in the student's reading errors and progress in the level of reading comprehension and reading level, the reading text called "Cracked Bucket" at the second grade level, in the second week the reading text called "The Child Who Doesn't Like Night" from the third grade Turkish textbook and the reading text called "Little Mouse and the Lion" from the fourth grade Turkish textbook were read by the student. As a result of the evaluations, it is determined that the student's reading level, which was at the second grade education level, increased to the fourth grade instructional level.
