Emotional effects of the teachers correction

Mistakes and mistake correction have a significant role in foreign language teaching. The mistakes that are made by students are parameters which show to the teachers the students? level of the acquisition of the language that they have been taught. It has been observed that emotional effects which occur on the students while the teacher corrects their mistakes have a negative or positive influence on students? motivation. This research was carried out in seven different schools in İstanbul. In this research study, a questionnaire that contains nine questions was applied among the eight different groups of the students. There were thirty students at different ages in each group. While the schools were being chosen, it was considered that they were not only state schools but also private schools. As an outcome of the evaluation of this research, it was revealed that the teachers in each group applied the correction methods in a range scale and also it was observed that the teachers intended to correct the students? mistakes immediately by interrupting their speech. It was also determined that the teachers? correction did not cause some feelings such as anger, shame or sadness on the students and although the students thought that the teachers? correction was necessary for their second language improvement, they were not pleased because of the teachers? correction as soon as they made mistakes. In addition, it has been observed that the positive feedback may increase the interest of the students to the lesson and mistake correction methods have a much more significant influence on students? motivation. If the teachers correct the students? mistakes in a suitable method, it can effect the students? performance positively in the classroom.
