The effect of material selection on the evaluation of the environmental effects of buildings

The buildings have negative effects on the natural environment and users in the process from the cradle to the grave. One of the important steps to be followed in order to eliminate these effects is the selection of materials with less environmental impact. In this context, the selection of materials according to the environmental impact performance gains importance in the design phase in line with the purpose and scope determined throughout the life cycle of the building. The building life cycle is a process that includes interrelated stages, starting with the supply of raw materials for buildings and ending with the recycling of the building. Building materials have negative effects on the environment and natural resources. Knowing these effects at the design stage is important in the context of choosing materials with less environmental impact. Nowadays, while cost is at the forefront in material selection, environmental effects are put into the background. In this context, life cycle assessment and life cycle cost analysis are evaluated together to emphasize the importance of environmental impacts of building materials. The aim of the thesis is to comparatively evaluate the possible environmental impacts of the project scenarios created with combinations of different roofing materials during the production and construction phases. Another aim of the thesis is to emphasize the importance of considering the environmental effects of building materials while creating their designs. In this context, alternative building materials that can be used for roof renovation in an educational building were determined and alternative scenarios were created with the determined building materials. By evaluating the scenarios, the environmental impact performances of the scenarios during the production and construction phases were tried to be determined.
