The dynamic and constructive nature of autobiographical memory has been examined in many studies. Previous research showed that different personality and cognitive characteristics relate to the phenomenological characteristics and narrative coherence of memories. However, no study has directly examined how creativity, as an individual difference, relates to the way people recall and narrate their personal memories. The present study investigated whether individual differences in creativity are associated with autobiographical memory phenomenology and narrative coherence. 136 Boğaziçi University students participated in the study. They recalled their most important life event and rated its phenomenological characteristics. They also completed the Alternative Uses Task (AUT) as a measure of divergent thinking and two self-report creativity scales: the Biographical Inventory of Creative Behaviors (BICB) and the Kaufman Domains of Creativity Scale (K-DOCS). Memories were coded for their coherence with the Narrative Coherence Coding Scheme (NaCCS; Reese et al., 2011). Results showed that creativity, measured by both divergent thinking and self-report scales, was not related to phenomenological characteristics of memory. However, divergent thinking was positively associated with narrative coherence across all dimensions. These findings suggest that while creativity does not influence the subjective richness of autobiographical memories, individuals with higher creative potential may construct more coherent and organized life narratives. The study contributes to understanding of individual differences in remembering and highlights creativity as a cognitive factor related to how people structure their personal experiences.
