An Investigation of the relationship between help seeking behaviors, fatalistic thoughts and five personality factors

This study is aimed to investigate the relationship between help-seeking behaviors, fatalistic thoughts and five personality factors driven from Big Five Personality Theory. In this study, a regression model set up to investigate the predictive value of five personality factors of extravertedness, agreablesness, cousciousness, neuroticisism, openness and fatalistic thoughts on help-seeking behaviors of interpersonal sensitivity, stuckness, need for counseling, believing in counseling and social acceptance. This study is conducted on 413 uviversity students. Big Five Personality Inventory, Help-Seeking Behaviors Scale, Knowledge on Destiny Scale and Fatalistic Thoughts Scale were used as measurement tools. The data analysis conducted with Multiple Hierarchic Regressgion Analysis on different types of Help-seeking behaviors. In the regression model demographics of SED, age, gender, knomledge on destiny, fatalistic thoughts and five personality factors were used. Demographics were entered the equation at the first step, knowledge on destiny and fatalistic thoughts at the second step, and personality faktors at the third step. Regression results revealed that stuckness type of help-seeking was best predicted by gender and extravertedness. Interpersonal openness seems to be predicted by introvertedness, agreablessness and openness to experince. Variance in Believing in counseling type of help- seeking can't be explained by any predictor in the model. Knowledge on destiny and fatalistic thoughts have predictive value for need for counseling type of help-seeking. The last type of help-seeking of social acceptance was best predicted by gender, fatalistic thoughts and openness to experience. In general being female having less fatalistic thoughts, being extraverted, and open to experience seem to be related to help-seeking behaviors. With these findings couclusive result were not reached in terms of the relationship between personality factors and help-seeking behaviors. vm
