Effects of personalized diet and physical exercise on nutrition parameters, physical performance and quality of life of malnutrition treatment at older adults

Abstract (EN)

Introduction and Aim: The older population is growing up in our country and missing of the malnutrition diagnosis and treatment couse to increase of morbidity and mortality rate in older adults[1]. There are a lot of clinical trials to treat of malnutrition in older adults with using oral nutritional supplement. But there is no clinical trial of investigate to effect of personalized diet on malnutrition and physical performance. Our study we aimed to examine of effects of personalized diet and physical exercise on malnutrition, physical performance and quality of life. Material and Methods: Total 20 patients included to study who over 65 years old with malnutrition and malnutrition risk from August 2020 to December 2020 at İstanbul Faculty of Medicine Clinical Nutrition and Geriatrics Unit. Study designed as prospective randomised and controlled. Diet and physical exercise applied to intervention group and the controll group took diet only. We investigate the nutrition parameters, physical performance and quality of life scores among the groups and in their each groups. Results: In study %55 of patients (n=11) was men and %45 of patients were women. Mean age of men was 72.6 and 70.7 of women. MNA mean scores increased significantly at the end of study (p=0.005). BMI mean scores also increased in diet and diet+exercise groups significantly (p=0.005 , p=0.01). There was significant diffirent of EQ-5D index scores in diet group (p=0.01) but there wasn't in diet+exercise group (p=0.89). There was significant diffirent of EQ-5D VAS scores in both groups (p=0.02 , p=0.02). Hand Grip strength increased in diet and diet+exersice group significantly (p=0.005 , p=0.005). But diet+exercise group's increasing rate was more over than diet group's (%34.5 , %32.6). TUG test scores decreased significantly in both groups (p=0.01 , p=0.01). Conclusion: We shown that there is improvement on nutrition parameters and physical performance with personalized diet and physical exercise. Our study determined of using personalized diet can be effective on malnutrition and physical performance againts using only oral nutrition supplement.
