The olders? exposure to abuse and negligence situations and effective factors

ABSTRACTThis study is carried out in order to determine the individuals over 65 and enrolled to Taştepe, Göztepe, Kernek and Istasyon Family Health Centers in the Malatya City Center being exposed to abuse and negligence situations and the effective factors.The study?s sample is constituted from 451 older who are chosen by means of determining sample size formula known as one of the probability sampling methods with % 95 significance level and 0.05% margin of error. Data was collected between October 2011 and January 2012. The data collection by Socio-demographic Characteristics Form prepared by the researcher, Abuse Evaluation Form, Katz?s Index of Daily Living Activities and Emotional Abuse Scale Perceived for the Grown-up were used. Data was analyzed by means of one- way variance, t- test, x2 and correlation.It was determined that 1.3% of the older are always exposed to the physical abuse, 0.8% of them are always exposed to the economic abuse , 2.9% of them are often exposed to the sexual abuse, 5.3% of them are always neglected and exposed to moderate emotional abuse. It is determined that the routinely abuse level of the older is low. It was determined that, the ones well on in life, the single ones, the ones with low level of education, housewives, the ones who are getting old age pension, the ones who are perceiving their level of income low, the ones from a disjointed family, the ones with chronic disease, the ones with very bad family relationship, the ones whose house are owned by their spouses or the older living in a rented house are more abused. The older living with their spouse and children are abused less. The caretakers addicted to medicine- alcohol are determined as one of the risk factors effective on abuse.In line with these conclusions, it can be suggested to the nurses to take precautions such as evaluating the abuse and negligence of the older, observing the abused and neglected older and their family very well, making people aware of abuse, especially the older who are one of the risk groups should be trained on this issue , and consulting to the neglected and abused older on where to get help.Key Words: Nursing, Abuse, Neglect, Elderly, Intereactive approch.
