Environmental effects of yacht generated wastewater in Phaselis bay and wastewater management in marinas

In order to specify the environmental effects in Phaselis Bay, exposed to an intensive pressure of land and marine users during the high season, the area has been examined during August and September. To determine the quality of marine water microbiologically, samples from extensively used southern and central harbours were taken for a fortnight in the morning, afternoon and evening periodically and these were analysed microbiologicallly (E.coli and intestinal enterecoc). So as to follow up the quality of marine water, samples from five different points were taken every two weeks. Samples were analysed microbiologically (E.coli, Intestinal enterecoc), chemically (TSS, BOD5, nitrate, phosphate, slikate, chlorophyll a), and physically (depth, temperature, salinity, conductivity). Names of the yachts visiting the bay, times of their visit, numbers of the passangers, length of their stay, numbers of the users of the sea and some other activities were observed. Some sea creatures living in the bay were detected and its bottom structure was observed. Also, based on the Marine Journal records and waste water (effluent) records in August and September, the amount of waste water given by the daily tour boats, daily boats on Marina-Phaselis, their visits on Phaselis, their tour periods and number of passengers and depending on this, their waste water potential were all identified. Some national, international and local legal regulations were studied and some practical shortcomings were detected in the light of current changes. By determining what has been done to control wastes produced by yachts in Kemer Marina, some comparative studies were carried out among marinas, yacht harbours and fishing burrows in Antalya and from outside. In this study, 20 yacht harbour administrators, 9 from Antalya and 11 from Muğla, Aydın, Balıkesir and İstanbul, filled out information forms. Those in Antalaya were analysed on the spot and their waste water intake services and their collection potentials were specified and based on this, some alternative solutions were suggested as to what can be done about the collection of waste water of yachts in Kemer Marina. Making use of all findings, the environmental effect in Phaselis Bay is evaluated and some suggestions to reduce the environmental pressure in the bay were presented.
