Abstract (TR)
Some herbal products are designed to support health and are commercialized as supplements and put into circulation on the market However, the biological properties of most of these products have not been established by applying scientific rules and analyzing them in a standardized manner. Various methods can be used to determine the biological effects and mechanisms of action of herbal products. Although some methods are more standardized, the standardization of methods, especially in the studies of antiviral activity of essential oils against viruses and in determining their cytotoxicity, is insufficient. In this study, it was aimed to determine the appropriate methodological approach for the evaluation of the efficacy and toxicity of the herbal supplement "Coldmix® İnhaler Damla" against influenza virus. In this study, the in vitro cytotoxicity of "Coldmix® İnhaler Damla", a blend of some compounds derived from eucalyptus and spruce plants, was evaluated using MDCK cells. The effect of the product on anti-influenza virus (A/PR/8/34 strain) was investigated in vitro using MDCK cells and in vivo using an animal model using BALB/c mice. It was determined that the vapor phase of ptoduct did not show toxic effects on MDCK cells at the recommended concentrations. It was observed that infected mice exposed to product started the recovery process (weight gains) earlier than infected mice that were not subjected to any treatment. In addition, when the lung homogenates of the mice whose lungs were randomly selected and removed on the 6th day of the experimental design were examined, it was calculated that those exposed to product had less virus shedding than the control group. Histopathologically, it was observed that the lung tissue damage of the mice in the product group was less than in the positive control group. In conclusion, the shortterm biological effects of the commercially available "Coldmix® Inhaler Drops" against the influenza virus were examined with scientific methods and it was evaluated that it could contribute to the recovery process from the disease without any toxic effects. However, in order to make a definitive statement in favor of or against the commercial product, it would be more useful to conduct such studies with larger experimental groups and long-term planning in order to reveal the biological effects of the product and to monitor its side effects.
