Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, a new Schiff base was synthesized as a green corrosion inhibitor by condensation reaction according to the literature and the structure of the compound was elucidated by FT-IR and 1H-NMR analyses. In order to test the applicability of this new type of Schiff base, the inhibitory effect on the corrosion behavior of mild steel in 1.0 M HCl solution was investigated by some electrochemical methods. In the measurements, 1.0 M HCl solutions with and without 1,0x10–5 M–1,0x10–3 M Schiff base were used as inhibitor. EIS, LPR and potentiodynamic polarization measurements were performed with these solutions after one hour of immersion at 298 K. The new Schiff base was found to be effective in both short and long immersion times. The inhibition effect of Schiff base, which is synthesized as a green inhibitor, on the corrosion of mild steel in HCl solution was also investigated by FE-SEM and AFM surface analysis techniques. As a result of the surface analysis, it was clearly observed that a protective film layer against corrosion was formed on the metal surface. Both the electrochemical test and the surface analysis results were highly compatible with each other. The new Schiff base synthesized in this study was successfully applied as an inhibitor for mild steel in acidic medium.
