Evaluation of attitudes of nurses working in the neonatal intensive care unit towards individualized, supportive and developmental care

This research was carried out as a descriptive study in order to evaluate the Attitudes of Nurses Working in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit towards Individualized, Supportive and Developmental Care of the Newborn. The sample of the study consisted of 255 nurses working in the neonatal intensive care unit in Gaziantep and voluntarily agreed to participate in the study. The data of the study were collected by face-to-face interview method using the "Data Collection Form", "Developmental Support Sufficiency Scale for Nurses (DSCS-N) ". For the analysis of the findings obtained from the research; SPSS 24.0 program was used. 38.8% of the nurses participating in the study were between the ages of 21-24, 44.3% were graduated from Health Vocational High School, 36.9% had a working time between 6 and 10 years, 42.7% worked in neonatal intensive care for 1 to 5 years. It was determined that 49.4% of them had a weekly working time between 41 and 48 hours, 57.6% of them chose their profession voluntarily, 78.8% of them chose the unit they worked in, and 87.1% were satisfied with being a neonatal nurse. It was determined that 68.6% of the nurses received training on newborns; It was determined that 54.1% of the trainings received Neonatal Resuscitation Program training, 9.8% neonatal individualized supportive developmental care training, 20.8% neonatal intensive care nursing certificate training, 11.8% breast milk training, 5.9% basic newborn training. It was seen that 81.6% of the nurses wanted to receive neonatal education, 53.3% of them wanted to receive neonatal intensive care nursing certificate training and 45.5% of them wanted to receive newborn individualized supportive developmental care training. When the (DSCS-N) total score average of the nurses according to the graduated school was examined, it was determined that the (DSCS-N) total score of the health vocational high school graduates was statistically significant and higher than the undergraduate graduates (p<0.05). A statistically significant difference was found between the mean scores of (DSCS-N) total score, Environmental Support, Interaction and Critical Thinking sub-dimensions according to the nurses' willingness to receive neonatal individualized supportive developmental care education (p<0.05).
