A comparison of the effect of kangaroo care, vanilla and lemon smell in reducing pain during Hepatitis-B vaccination in the newborn

Abstract (EN)
In this study, it was aimed to compare the effects of kangaroo care, vanilla and lemon scent applications on the pain caused by hepatitis-B vaccine administration in newborn babies. The population of the randomized controlled study consists of healthy newborns born at term (37-42 weeks) between 11.10.2019-31.12.2019. The research sample group, on the other hand, consisted of 128 newborns with the research criteria, including kangaroo care (32 newborns), vanilla scent (32 newborns), lemon scent (32 newborns) and control (32 newborns) groups, which had the power to represent the universe according to the power analysis. Research data were collected using "Data Collection Form", "Neonatal Pain Diagnosis Scale (NIPS)", "Face Coding System (NFCS) Scoring Form". SPSS V23 package program was used in the statistical analysis of the research data.When the post-vaccine NIPS pain score scores were examined in newborns, the kangaroo care group compared to the lemon and control groups; The vanilla scent group, on the other hand, made a significant difference in pain scores compared to the control group (p<0.001). The post-vaccine NFCS pain score of newborns in the kangaroo care group created a significant difference between the pain score averages of the other groups (p<0.001). When the heart rate and oxygen saturation averages in newborns were examined after vaccination, the kangaroo care group compared to the lemon and control groups; On the other hand, vanilla scent group created a significant difference in the mean heart rate and oxygen saturation compared to the control group (p<0.001). Crying time measurement of newborns was found to be lower in the kangaroo care group (Ort±SS=9.22±5.01). According to the research findings, it was determined that kangaroo care and vanilla scent, which are among the non-pharmacological methods of coping with pain during vaccination applications, are effective methods in invasive procedures and can be used to relieve the pain of newborns.
