Language examination on the sports pages of regional newspapers (Tokat example)

Sports have been a part of human beings' lives due to their need to be in touch with their environment, that is, nature. Walking, hunting or escaping from wild animals, natural disasters, running and changing places have caused humans to exhibit physical movements in order to feed themselves. This is reflected in the motifs and paintings drawn on the caves used as houses and shelters. As people and humanity developed and races merged with each other, sports, which became the whole of these physical movements, diversified and sports were divided into different branches over time. Each branch has its own rules and unique concepts. In modern times, these concepts are called terms. The collection of concepts called sports terms has corresponded to many meanings for each sports branch in its own special way. The development and progress of humanity has brought along information exchange and communication. Sport has also been directly affected by these developments. Press and communication organs have played a major role in reaching the masses in every branch of sports. Newspapers, which have the greatest impact here and are included in the print media, provide great opportunities to their readers. Sports newspapers and sports pages of newspapers have a great contribution to the transportation of sports and sports news to sports fans. It was tried to determine the sports terms used in the sports pages of Tokat and Tokat Güneş Haber media organs published in Tokat province and in which sports branches these terms are used the most. The main sources of the study were the February and August issues of Tokat newspaper in 2019 and the January and July issues of Tokat Güneş Haber newspaper in 2021. In order to obtain detailed information about the newspapers, which are the main sources of the study, oral interviews were conducted with newspaper managers and the notes obtained from these interviews were utilized in the relevant sections of the study. Sports dictionaries referenced by the Turkish Language Association were used to determine the terms. With the study titled Language Analysis in the Sports Pages of Local Newspapers (Tokat Example), it is aimed to draw attention to the use of terms in the sports pages of Tokat local newspapers, which have not been sufficiently studied in the literature.
