The effects tourism on urban texture and life in Antalya from local people's perspectives

Tourism activities create some effects on the environment in which they are located. The aim of this study is to reveal the views of the local people living in Antalya about the effects of tourism on the urban texture and life. In the study, the interview method, one of the qualitative research methods was adopted. The model of the research was designed as a case study. The participants of the study were determined by the criterion sampling method, one of the purposeful sampling methods. 17 adult individuals participated in the study. The data of the research were compiled through a semi-structured interview form. The data obtained were evaluated through descriptive analysis. Findings related to five sub-problems as a result of the analysis were evaluated under various categories. Five definition categories were obtained regarding the tourism definitions of the participants: source of foreign exchange, travel from one place to another for holiday purposes, advertising tool for the promotion of the country, profession and lifestyle for living. Views of the participants on tourism in Antalya in the past and today; five definition categories have been obtained: major developments in tourism from the past to the present, lack of development in tourism at the desired level, increase in diversity in tourism, extension of the tourism that was made in the past six months to the whole year, and the beginning of the tourism that was made in the center of Antalya before, also in the countryside. Based on the results of the research, some suggestions for researchers, local and central administrators were presented. Keywords: Antalya, Social Studies, Tourism, Culture, Change
