A study on the relationship of local people's attitudes towards Syrians to social cohesion case of Şanlıurfa

The aim of this study is to examine the views and attitudes of local people living in the city center of Şanlıurfa regarding Syrian individuals under temporary protection. Learning the attitudes revealed; It is understood that by determining the problems, in the context of social cohesion and social work, a new search should be made for its products. The understanding and policies that target Syrian individuals' harmony with the local community are important in terms of affecting the unity of the services provided and breaking the negative perception. It is seen that individuals who work together, live and interact in the same society and develop negative attitudes create a culture of conflict between these groups. In this context, it is important to identify the local people's attitudes towards Syrian individuals and the variables that may affect these attitudes. The research sample consists of individuals residing in Şanlıurfa and volunteering to participate in the study over the age of 18. Within the scope of obtaining data from the participants of the research, while the demographic information form and the attitude scale were applied to the Syrians within the scope of the quantitative phase, the semi-structured interview form was used in the qualitative phase. The survey was conducted with 798 people. This study is a cross-sectional study and the data were evaluated by scanning method. Quantitative data were analyzed using the SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) 22.0 package program. This result obtained in the study indicates that the local people have a negative attitude towards Syrians under temporary protection. Quantitative findings obtained from the research data have been associated with socio-demographic information. When the results of the qualitative findings are examined, when the first three words that come to mind when the Syrian people are mentioned are classified; (hunger, misery, unemployment, war, children, death, discrimination, immorality, theft, victimization, begging, despair, poverty, Assad regime).
