A neuroarchitectural experience in vernacular settlements: Comparative emotion analysis in Çamlihemşin

It is easy to observe that in this period when the global age has made human life mundane, one should pay more attention to the quantity and quality of one's relationship with the universe and oneself. Man's inner and spiritual intimacy with being is an experiential journey directly related to the Creator's ongoing act of creation. Situated at the interface of architecture and theology, phenomenology, cognitive science, and neurology, the study develops on an interdisciplinary research model. The study is addressed with a fiction that aims to investigate the theological representation of the creation of space, the production of space by human beings, the meeting of space with human beings, the behavior and experiences of human beings in space, and the intuitions and emotions that the experience will create on human beings. The study's main purpose is to reveal with neuroscientific methods how local architecture, shaped in harmony with existence, affects the spiritual connection of human beings with existence and their behavior; their emotional, perceptual, and intuitive aspects; and the mental and cognitive process of their brain. The experiment planned in line with this purpose was carried out in Çamlıhemşin district of Rize, in the Yukarı Çamlıca Neighborhood, which represents local architecture, and in the Merkez Neighborhood, which houses examples of contemporary architecture. Within the scope of the study, the Embedded Design of the mixed research method was selected. Real Experimental Design (Mobile EEG), one of the quantitative research designs, was used and Fourier Transform and Power Spectra of the data obtained were calculated. In addition, the Semantic Differentiation Scale was applied and Statistical Data Analysis (ANOVA) was performed for both data groups. Among the qualitative research designs, Phenomenology Design and interview Method were used; Content Analysis of the data obtained was performed with MAXQDA. The results show that when examined through beta waves, YMDD creates more positive emotions than YMİD; when examined through theta waves, YMDD creates more positive emotions than GMDD; GMID creates more positive emotions than YMİD; YMİD creates more positive emotions than GMDD.
