Use of geographic information in local government

Today, with the developing technology, local administrations are able to reach accurate and reliable information in a short time by using information technology and systems contrary to the conventional methods. Besides, the storage, processing and presentation of the information to the user can be realized easily. Therefore, the service policy of local administrations takes an effective and rational form and it is provided that the citizens can easily access the service they need. This thesis titled "The use of geographical information in local administrations" has covered the subject of local administrations and geographical information systems in detail from past to present. The characteristics, functionality, types and structures of local administrations have been examined and the components, functions, usage areas of geographical information systems, especially their usage and importance in local administratios have been discussed. In this study the use of geographic information and geographic information systems in Turkey, impact and benefits of geographic information systems on local governments have been intented to be examined, and has been tried to be expressed with several domestic and foreign examples. In order to complete the study technically, a wide literature review was conducted, as well as the data obtained with the observation technique. In addition, data was obtained from various institutions and organizations in order to see and explain the use of geographical information systems, and the process was interpreted. As a result; The use of geographical information systems in local administrations has been accelerating since the first use of geographic information systems. If we look at the conclusions we have drawn from the examples, the need for geographic information systems has increased in the 21st century, called the technology age, and the use of geographic information systems has become a necessity. When we look at the benefits and convenience of Geographic Information Systems, it is obvious how effective the system is in contrast to ordinary methods. For all these reasons, in today's conditions, geographic information systems have become an indispensable element with their contributions to local governments. In this context, the use of geographic information systems should be aimed at reaching the maximum level throughout the country. Considering human interests and service to people; all material, spiritual and legal barriers that prevent the spread of geographical information systems and their use throughout the country should be removed and supported, personnel training should be carried out periodically and up to date and the system should continue to be developed and used.
