Comparison of management style dimensions between domestic and foreign hotels: A study about hotel chains

Economic, political and technological changes and developments in the world forced many businesses that are operating in different sectors to go beyond their national borders. Hotel businesses affected by this development and change with different ways of internationalization beyond their national borders and continue their activities in different cultural environments. When it's considered that the management practice of businesses are influenced by culture; it became important to determine the differences and similarities of management styles of businesses with different cultural aspects within same border. In this context, the objective of this research is to explain and identify the similarities and differences between management styles of domestic and foreign chain hotels operating in Turkey in consideration of their size. In line with this aim, firstly survey was conducted on 604 participants who work at 101 international and 66 national hotel chain between January and April 2013, then gathered data were analyzed. Frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation techniques were used in descriptive analyses and non-parametric tests (Mann Whitney U, Kruskal Wallis H) were used in discriminant analyses. As a result of these data analysis in domestic and foreign hotels operating in Turkey, it's determined that there is differences on the subjects of "managerial leadership" and "paternalistic orientation" while exist similarities on others, namely; "decision making", "communication model", "control mechanism" and "interdepartmental relationship".
