A mixed method research on green computing awareness: the case of Konya province

Today, information and communication technologies are developing and changing at a rapid pace and this situation includes positive and negative effects on the environment. In this study, it is aimed to examine the information and communication technologies usage status, green computing awareness of public sector and private sector employees operating in Konya province and to determine the green computing application factors in companies. In this research, a mixed research approach was adopted and a questionnaire, which is a quantitative data collection tool, was applied to the employees, and data were collected from the company managers by the structured interview method. The sample of the research consists of 212 employees working in the public and private sectors in Konya in 2021. While creating the questionnaire and structured interview questions used to collect data in the research, different studies in the literature were used. Factor analysis, Independent Samples t-Test and One Way ANOVA were used in the analysis of quantitative data. According to the findings, it was concluded that among the dimensions that constitute the green computing awareness of the employees in the private sector, the average of green computing obligation is higher than that of the employees in the public sector. Another dimension that creates awareness is that the average of sleep mode/screen saver usage is higher among employees in the public sector. It is seen that the green computing activities of the company in the public sector mainly focus on issues such as recycling and waste disposal, while the companies in the private sector focus on energy saving and minimum cost. With this study, which is thought to provide important contributions in terms of filling the gap in green computing awareness in the literature, suggestions for future studies have also been made.
