Abstract (EN)
Workplace environments are transforming in line with up-to-date concepts in office building design and technological developments in today's world, where people spend most of their time indoors. In this context, sustainability in the built environment emerges as a frequently adopted concept in design and construction approaches. Green certification systems, developed to evaluate environmental sustainability in buildings, play a decisive role in implementing this concept. Indoor environmental quality (IEQ) is one of the factors considered in the environmental sustainability assessment by green building certification systems. Specifically, for commercial buildings, indoor environmental quality is often associated with employees' health, productivity, work efficiency, and consequently, economic gain. However, many post-occupancy evaluation (POE) studies, conducted in green-certified office buildings where energy efficiency is prioritized, report various problems related to indoor environmental quality by the users. To address this issue, this thesis aims to analyse indoor environmental quality in a green-certified office building. The research was conducted for a green-certified, multi-story office building located in Istanbul. To investigate the indoor environmental quality, particularly the thermal comfort perception of the occupants, a post-occupancy evaluation study was carried out. The methodology of the study consists of literature review, identification of research questions, selection of the case study building, survey design, data collection (document collection, surveys, personal interviews), analysis of results and overall evaluation. The survey prepared for the occupants focuses on thermal comfort but also includes other components that determine indoor environmental quality, such as visual comfort, acoustical comfort and indoor air quality. In this regard, it aims to gather information on occupant's awareness level regarding the sustainable building concept, their behaviours in relation to it and their experiences and satisfaction with indoor environmental quality. To achieve this goal, the survey presented to the occupants includes various types of questions. The data obtained through the survey and the personal interviews conducted in this thesis study were evaluated comparatively. The findings indicate that the building occupants who participated in the survey voted for high satisfaction with indoor environmental quality initially. However, in personal interviews, it was frequently observed that occupants reported complaints about thermal discomfort and other indoor environmental quality problems. The findings also show that an increase in occupant awareness levels brings about more sensitive behaviours in terms of sustainability. In this respect, the results underline the importance of awareness-raising activities on the subject. While the findings of the study are specific to the field study addressed, the methodology followed in the study can be applied to different buildings. This way, it can contribute to improvement of occupant experience and promotion of sustainable practices.
