Green facade systems: A design suggestion

NUR BELKAYALI Green facade systems are systems that are mainly used for aesthetic, ecological purposes and formed by wrapping plants with a hug, climber or pendumum form directly or with some building elements. Green facade systems, which emerged as an example of the new building technique in the modern building process, have emerged as an important building system that should be applied for the solution of climate change and environmental problems. Supporting the increase of biodiversity and ecological value, green facade systems also reduce the urban heat island effect. Likewise, these systems are important elements in increasing the quality of life, especially in providing outdoor comfort. In addition to their insulation features, they also have functions in terms of improving the air quality, reducing rain damage by providing rainwater drainage. For this thesis, the city of Zliten in Libya, which is located in the Mediterranean climate zone and where high temperatures are felt in the summer, was chosen as the study area. A model design has been developed for green facade systems that can be suggested to be implemented in this region. In this way, it is predicted that the electricity consumption used for air conditioning will decrease in the region and thus the amount of carbon released into the air will decrease. With this application, it is thought that the negative environmental conditions due to overheating in the area can be prevented to some extent.
