A study on the relationship of perfectionism with God conceptions and self-esteem in adult individuals

The aim of the study is to examine the relationships between perfectionism, self-esteem and God conceptions of adult individuals. The quantitative method was adopted in the study and the relational survey model was utilized. The sample of the study consisted of 402 adult individuals between the ages of 18-65. The questionnaire form, which constitutes the data of the study, was sent to the participants online via Google Forms in October-November. In the form, "Personal Information Form", "APS Perfectionism Scale", "Perception of God Scale", "Self-Esteem Scale" were used. In addition, questions such as parental attitudes, number of children, religious beliefs and subjective understanding of religiosity were added to the form. SPSS package program was used for data analysis. Descriptive analysis was performed using descriptive statistical methods for the variables of the study. T-test, ANOVA, Tukey Post Hoc and Pearson Correlation analyses were used to analyze and compare the data obtained from the participants. According to the findings obtained from the study, some significant results were obtained between demographic variables and perfectionism sub-dimensions. Accordingly, significant relationships were found between the age of the participants and maladaptive perfectionism, self-esteem and conceptions of God. In addition, no relationship was found between gender and educational status and perfectionism sub-dimensions. Another finding of the study is that single individuals have higher maladaptive perfectionism attitudes than married individuals. As a result of the study, no statistically significant relationships were found between the levels of adaptive perfectionism and self-esteem, positive and negative God imagination scores of adult individuals. However, positive correlations were found between the participants' maladaptive perfectionism levels and negative God imagination and negative correlations were found with positive God imagination. When the relationship between participants' self-esteem and their conceptions of God was examined, it was found that individuals with positive conceptions of God had high self-esteem scores, while individuals with negative conceptions of God had low self-esteem scores.
