The effectiveness of vocal warm-up exercises in adults

This study aims to examine the effectiveness of vocal warming, using Multi-Dimensional Voice Analyse Program (MDVP) and Phonatuary Aerodynamic System (PAS) in the adults who are having no voice problems and not professional voice users. The study design is within subjects pretest-posttest design and between subjects design. A total of 28 participants, 18 females and 10 males, were included in the study. The vocal warm-up exercises consist of breathing, stretching, phonation and resonance exercises. Before vocal warm-up, the voice was recorded via MDVP and PAS programs; and the same procedure was repeated after the vocal warm-up. MDVP analysis included acoustic parameters of the voice, while PAS analysis included both acoustic and aerodynamic parameters. Within the scope of this study, the gender variable is also evaluated. The results of the study indicated that there was significant decrease in jitter and shimmer values, MDVP parameters, following vocal warm-up. Significant differences after vocal warm-up also included PAS parameters, frequency range, expiratory airflow duration, mean peak air pressure and expiratory volume. The findings indicate that vocal warm up exercises is likely to improve the voice significantly and increase objective vocal quality by changing acoustic and aerodynamic features of the voice.
