Examining the relationship between grief processes of adult individuals and MMPI-2 profiles

The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between the grief processes of adult individuals and the variables related to loss experience and MMPI-2 profiles, which express personality traits. The severity of the mourning processes of the individuals, the traumatic perception levels of the loss, the social functionality levels after the loss, and the type of death, which are the variables of loss experiences, the cause of death, the sudden / expected death, the age of the deceased, the relationship with the deceased, etc. It is aimed to examine the relationship between factors and personality traits of the person experiencing mourning. It is also aimed to examine the relationship between the socio-demographic characteristics of individuals experiencing mourning and their grief processes. The sample of this study consists of a total of 214 adult individuals, 90 females and 124 males, who live in Istanbul, are over the age of 18 and have lost a first-degree relative within a period of at least 6 months and at most 2 years during the data collection process. Personal Information Form, Basic Grief Elements Inventory, Two Dimensional Grief Scale and Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 were used as data collection tools in the study. Before starting data analysis, the collected data was sent to computer environment and statistical analysis was made with SPPS 25 program. The normality test, which is the first step of the analysis, was applied and the kurtosis-skewness values were checked. Since Kurtosis-Skewness values are between -2 and +2, it was decided to be a normal distribution. The reliability level was determined to be 95%. T-Test was used to analyze the difference between two independent variables. ANOVA analysis was applied to analyze the difference between multiple groups. Pearson Correlation analysis was used for the relationship between two or more variables. Using Multiple Linear Regression, the effect of independent variables on the dependent variable was observed. As a result of the study, it was determined that the levels of depression, hypochondriasis, hypomania, psychosis and social introversion, among the MMPI-2 clinical scales, were effective on the grief processes of adult individuals. It was revealed that the scores of anxiety, fears, health-related concerns, anger, low self-worth, and family problems from MMPI-2 content scales were related to how the grief process proceeded. In addition, it was found that the MMPI-2 PSY-5 subscales, aggression, negative affect and introversion, and the post-traumatic stress disorder subscale, which is one of the complementary scales, are related to the grief processes of adult individuals. Among the socio-demographic characteristics, the results were obtained that there were significant relationships between gender and marital status, variables related to the loss experience, the cause of death, how close the deceased was perceived, whether the death was expected or not, and the age of the disappeared and mourning processes.
