Abstract (EN)
The space has been handled with its physical aspect for many years. Space is not a volumetric structure measured only by numerical data. There are many types of venues. A person is a social space. Social space is the space created by people living together through commoning. Social space has an important role in creating the desired dramatic effect in movies. Light, sound, camera, editing, signs and spatial design are components that form thecinema. An effective cinematic space is created by the harmonious use of these elements. There are various theories in cinema. One of them is reality theory. S. Kracauer and A. Bazin are the people who laid the foundations of realist theory. Italian Neorealism and French New Wave cinema are also movements influenced by realist theory. In both movements, social problems were discussed and films shot with a realistic approach. Real places and sounds are used in the movies. Natural light was used. The daily life of the people was recorded by taking the camera down to the street. Realistic films were shot within the framework of the Social Realism Movement in Turkey. Yılmaz Güney is also an artist influenced by this movement. Güney described social problems in her film Umut (1970) based on the life story of the individual. The film tells the story of the carriage riders who succumbed to modern technology. The film deals with the disappearance of poor people in the wheel of capitalism through the character of Cabbar.Since the elements that make up the cinematic space are used with a realistic approach; The movie is full of realistic elements from start to finish. In the first chapter of the thesis, the problem, purpose and importance of the thesis, literature studies, research studies, methods and limitations are explained. In the second and third chapters, the use of space and realism in cinema were discussed and a theoretical background was created. In the fourth chapter, the connection between the use of space and reality in Yılmaz Güney's cinema is explained and the spaces used in the movie Umut (1970) are analyzed. In the fifth chapter, which is the conclusion, the relationship between the reality phenomenon and the use of space in Yılmaz Güney's film Umut (1970) is explained based on the findings obtained in the previous chapters.
