Women on the road: Gender in travel narratives and crossing borders

In this thesis, both the individual and social meaning of traveling are examined by emphasizing women as subjects. There are more traveling women in the historical process than we anticipate and know. This thesis has emerged both to reveal their existence and to make them visible and to explore what it means to them to travel, to be a wandering woman, what they expect from their travels, how they make sense of life on the road and whether they find what they are looking for in their journeys.
