Analysis of managerial competencies and a model proposal related to managerial competencies for management levels: An example in automotive sector

The concept of competency to organizations has taken places among the most important issues in recent years. High competition, the changes experienced in customer expectations, rapid technological changes and the improvement of the efficiency and performance of the organization have directed the organizations to the competency-based practices to ensure efficiency. In this context, the competencies that managers have for the organization have a more special significance.In this study, the theoretical background of the competency concept and its relationships with human resource management were reviewed in general then the managerial competencies were examined in detail. In this context, managerial competencies in terms of managerial levels, managerial competency classification and managerial competency models were examined. Moreover, which methods of assessments used to evaluate managerial competencies and evaluation results in managerial effectiveness were taken place. Because of the different categories and different models in the literature for managerial competencies, from the point of the theoretical infrastructure of this study managerial competency models were developed to managerial levels and applicability of these models were tested in the main industry firms and subsidiaries industry firms operating in the Turkish Automotive Sector. The data were analyzed by using statistical methods and structural equation modelling. In the research results, managerial competency models with the structural validity for individual upper, middle and lower management levels were reached. Upper level of managerial competency model consists of five dimensions and twenty competencies, middle level of managerial competency model consists of a dimension and nine competencies and lower level of managerial competency model consists of a dimension and eleven competencies.Key Words: Competencies, Managerial Competencies.
