In this thesis, I try to explain the essence of human action through Greek tragedies. With this attempt, I aim to conduct a discussion by centering on Karl Jaspers's concept of boundary situation and making use of Michael Bakhtin's concept of threshold chronotope. In the example of Oedipus that I focus on in this study, fate emerges as a boundary situation for Oedipus which he cannot leap over and therefore is doomed to be exposed to. On his way to this fate, Oedipus encounters some thresholds. On the other hand , these thresholds are boundary situations that he cannot easily evade but can somehow leap over them with his skills. When the fate becomes his reality, Oedipus will look back and realize that these thresholds and boundary situations are experiences that serve his fate as a boundary situation. For Oedipus, who is deeply shaken when faced with his fate as a mere failure, a new possibility arises; possible Existenz. In other words, a possibility arises for self-discovery, enlightening his Existenz and gaining self-consciousness. This form of Existenz offers him a new possibility of action; unconditional action. The unconditional action that emerges after Oedipus faces his fate as a boundary situation will be a free action stemming from its own internal determinations, unlike an action that serves his various interests and purposes. Indeed, when he takes unconditional action, Oedipus will have the courage to take responsibility for his own choices and decisions.
