Executive functions and reading comprehension: A bibliometric analysis

Since the aim of this study is to conduct a bibliometric analysis of articles related to executive functions and reading comprehension, bibliometric analysis—one of the quantitative research methods—was chosen to analyze the data. In the study, keywords determined to access articles on the subject were searched using the Web of Science database, and 161 articles obtained were analyzed using the VOSviewer software. The analysis revealed that in recent years, the importance of executive functions and reading comprehension has increased, and there has been a rise in the number of studies conducted on this topic. The field with the most studies on the subject is psychology; the most influential country is the United States; the most influential university is the University of Padua; the most influential author is Kelly B. Cartwright; the most influential journals are Reading and Writing and Learning and Individual Differences; and the most influential articles are those written by Cain et al. (2004) and Nouwens (2021). The most frequently used keywords are "working memory" and "reading comprehension." The most common words used in abstracts are comprehension, executive function, inhibition, text, reading comprehension, relationship, study, child, memory, and task. As a result of the study, it was observed that most of the research on this topic has been conducted abroad, while fewer studies have been carried out in Turkey. Therefore, it can be concluded that more research on this subject is needed in Turkey.
