An examination of the relationship between generation Z's digital game addictions and digital parenting attitudes

The integration of the digital world into daily life has facilitated access to information and enhanced communication opportunities. Generation Z, born between 2000 and 2021, actively utilizes technology and demonstrates significant interest in digital games. However, digital game addiction has been associated with weakened social relationships and decreased academic performance. Meanwhile, many parents lack sufficient knowledge and technical skills to protect their children from potential digital risks. Therefore, the concept of digital parenting has gained importance. Digital parenting refers to parents' ability to understand and effectively guide their children's interactions in digital environments. This study investigates the relationship between digital game addiction among Generation Z and the level of digital parenting awareness. A mixed-methods research design was employed, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative approaches. Quantitative data were collected through surveys, while qualitative data were gathered via in-depth interviews. The study sample consisted of children aged 12–18 who actively play digital games and their parents. In total, 228 parent–child pairs participated in the survey, followed by interviews with the 10 most and 10 least game-addicted children and their parents. The findings provide valuable insights into the role of parents in guiding their children in the digital world. The study discusses both the positive and negative aspects of digital games and evaluates the influence of parental awareness in this process. Based on the results, recommendations are made for future research and practices to support Generation Z in developing healthy digital habits.
