The effect of intelligence games on verbal reasoning skills

Intelligence games are learning tools that develop high-level thinking skills. As the name suggests, the juxtaposition of the words "intelligence" and "game" indicates that fun and learning take place together. The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of intelligence games on verbal reasoning skills.In this research single-group experimental model has been used. Quantitative data has been created by supporting qualitative data obtained through semi-structured interviews. The study group of the research consists of 10 seventh grade students in a village secondary school in Kütahya. In the study, 15 games have been played throughout 12 weeks. In the selection of the games, the Elective Intelligence Games course, the Turkish Federation of Mind and Intelligence Games and the Turkish Intelligence Foundation games have been used. Quantitative data of the research have been compiled with the verbal reasoning questions of the Transition System to High Schools and the verbal reasoning questions of the sample questions prepared by the General Directorate of Assessment & Examination Services of the Ministry of National Education. Qualitative data have been obtained through interviews with students throughout 12 weeks. Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test analysis has been used in the analysis of quantitative data. Content analysis technique has been used in the analysis of qualitative data. As a result of the Non-Parametric Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test obtained in the study, it has been observed that the pre-test scores differes significantly from the post-test scores. With the analysis of the qualitative data, the general views of the students about the mind games and the effects of the mind games on the students were reached. In line with the results obtained, various suggestions have been made to researchers who will conduct new studies on intelligence games and educators who will implement such games.
