Expectations and social problems of families with intellectually disabled children: Sample of Düzce-Yığılca

In society, Intellectual disability is not only important issue and but also important social, economical and cultural problems for families with intellectually disabled children, When families with intellectually disabled children are compared with normal families, they have more medicial treatment and care expenditures than normal families and also these families don't have enough time for themselves and their social, cultural developments because they lose time in terms of their intellectually disabled childrens. In addition, families with intellectually disabled children expose to some negative approaches and attitudies as discrimination and stigma from their social surroundings so their life are affected as important. In other aspect, they think that Government aids are important but not enough. Furthermore, these families worry about their intellectually disabled childrens because of the fact that they generally think that after end of their life, their intellectually disabled children can have economical needs, social care and social supports. The aim of this thesis is to analyze social problems and expectations of families with intellectually disabled children in Yıgılca of Duzce. This research deals with families social problems and expectations in four categories as the process of adaptation to disability, social support and relations, disability (social) politics, expectations and suggestions. Study group of this research consist of intellectually disabled children who continue education and their families in a rehabilitation Office in Yıgılca of Duzce. The sample of the research consists of 20 families (18 mother or father and a grand father and a grand mother who are first – degree relatives) of intellectually disabled children's who are interviewed as the deeply.
