Self-compassion, childhood experiences, and basic psychological needs as predictors of bullying victimization: A mixed method study

In this study, the role of self-compassion, childhood experiences and basic psychological needs in predicting bullying victimization of high school students is discussed. In addition, the views of high school students on victimization of bullying were also examined in the light of qualitative findings. In this study, which is a mixed method research, "Personal Information Form", "Multi dimensional Bullying Victimization Scale", "Self-Compassion Short Form", "Basic Psychological Needs Scale at School for Adolescents", "Childhood Experiences Scale" and "Interview Form" used. The sample of the research consists of 579 students in the quantitative dimension and 12 students in the qualitative dimension. T-Test, Pearson Correlation and Hierarchical Regression Analysis were used for data analysis and content analysis was performed. In the research findings, it was seen that demographic variables such as economic status, class level and school type, self-compassion, childhood experiences and basic psychological needs were significant predictors of bullying victimization. In addition, in the light of high school students' opinions, experiences of bullying victimization, effects of victimization, risk factors and protective factors were determined. As a result, it was concluded that high school students' bullying victimization is related to individual characteristics and past experiences, and familial and environmental factors.
